Narcolepsy
WHAT IS NARCOLEPSY?
Narcolepsy is a chronic autoimmune neurological sleep disorder that involves poor control of sleep-wake cycles.
People With Narcolepsy (PWN) experience periods of extreme daytime sleepiness (EDS) and sudden, irresistible sleep attacks.
This can strike at any time and usually last a few seconds to several minutes.
EDS is the main symptom. Other primary symptoms of narcolepsy include:
Cataplexy – loss of muscle tone triggered by emotion.
Hypnagogic Hallucinations – distorted perceptions of very vivid dreams.
Sleep Paralysis – inability to move or talk right before sleeping or during waking up.
Other symptoms include disturbed nocturnal sleep and automatic behavior while awake.
All of these symptoms may be present in various combinations and degrees of severity.
Narcolepsy can effect daily activities enormously.
People fall asleep while at school, work, in the middle of a conversation or operating any machinery.
